The Nauru Utilities Authority (NUA) launched its prepayment metering system today. The prepayment meters were installed on all homes and small businesses in Nauru over the past three months. Over 1,800 meters were installed in May, June and July by Top Energy (Fiji) Ltd, Central Meridian Inc, and Ocean Construction. Along with the installation of the meters and their activation into prepayment mode, the NUA is now providing 24-hour power to all its customers thus ending the load-shedding schedule that had been in place over the past several years. Residential customers will now pay for their electricity entirely in cash, allowing the NUA to move towards cost-recovery. Initial public reaction to the new metering system has been positive, as customers now have 24-hour access to electricity and are happy to pay for the improved level of service.
